Traditionally  ETNOFILm, as a part of its additional program, always tries to bond different forms of art and profession. This year, in a cooperation with  Mirosav Kraljević Galerry, FARO11 Association and Rovinj Heritage Museum, at thursday 28th of April 2016. at 8:30 PM, at the Gallery of Saint Thomas brings you and exhibition by Emanuel Mathias: „Primatologist / on choosing an appropriate distance.

As part of his project Primatologist / On Choosing an Appropriate Distance, the artist accompanied a group of primatologists and ethnologists on a research trip to Indonesia. Through observing the observers, the researchers themselves became the object of investigation, one which can be used to pose the question to what extent a complex research process in the field can be made visible using artistic means. The main thesis of the work is that a new form of perception arises in the cinematic reproduction of an observed situation, which makes use of a synchronized, simultaneous portrayal of various perspectives on the same event, a new form which dissolves the hierarchical relationship between the observer and the observed. The work aims to place the usually invisible observer (the researcher) as well as the observer of that observer (the artist) at the center of attention, through the investigation and appropriation of scientific methods, such as those used to observe modes of behavior in the wild (nature, jungle), as well as through research into the personal archives of climatologist.

Emanuel Mathias got his degree at Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. He was in an art residence in Yogjakarta, Indonesia (2014/2015.) and in Bauhaus Dessau (2013.). Recently, he worked on his exhibition Art, Freedom and Lebensfreude in C/O BerlinBerlin (2015.), Memories Compounded (with Iveta Vaivode) in Goethe Institute, Mexico City (2015.) and Kino und der kinematographische Blick in Kunsthalle Memmingen (2013.)

The admission is free, and the exhibition will be opened from 28th to 30th of April.

For the last thirteen years, she has been working as an artist in India, but she is a frequent guest dancer around the world (in America, Europe and all over Asia). Bharatanatjam, the most popular dance of south India, universally known as the finest expression of Indian culture. Kathak is a classical north Indian dance, and his name comes from katha,  which means “story”. In that sense, the dancer is a narator that gives us mythological sotires from India, through her dance movements.

ETNOFILm_Smeđi šećer

Our closing party will be traditionally held at the Mexican restaurant „La Concha“, and the night will bring you a Dr. Smeđi Šećer (Brown Sugar) and his eclectic vinyl selection. He is a real vinyl DJ who has been filling the dance floors in Rijeka with funk, soul and dancefloor jazz music from his 45 rpm records, flexi discs and other types of obscure vinyl since 2007. He dedicated his life to finding absolute pleasure, making sonic collages and unveiling the original groove, the bare and true magic that can only be found in rare studio moments of discographic history preserved in vinyl.

There is no entrance and all of you hungry for fun and good music, you`re welcome to come and close the Festival with us all.

Experience different cultures on film and enjoy our additional 8th ETNOFILm program.
